Shawna Patrick, MS, BSN, RN-BC
Prior to my nursing career, I obtained a dual Master’s Degree in Cardiac Rehabilitation & Exercise Science, and worked as an Exercise Physiologist. This experience opened my eyes to the field of nursing, leading me to obtain an Associate’s Degree in Nursing in 2000, then later a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in 2010. In 2012, I was certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Nursing Professional Development Specialist, and in May 2015, I completed the ANCA’s Core Curriculum in Cannabis Nursing.
My sixteen years of nursing have taken me through a variety of specialties. As a clinical nurse, I have worked in the areas of medical-surgical and oncology, critical care, house supervisor, and nursing education, specifically as the Staff Development Coordinator at Aspen Valley Hospital (AVH) for a total of 8 years.
In 2008, while working at AVH, I pursued other nursing interests outside of the hospital. I started my own nursing education business, Nurses for Nursing, for which I wrote, produced, and hosted mock trials which involve a nurse being charged with negligence related to the death of a patient. During the the trial, the audience becomes the “jury” and must decide the verdict based on the testimony and evidence they see and hear during the trial. This event was very successful and taught at several nursing conferences at hospitals and colleges around the United States until 2013. From 2010 to 2013, I also worked as a Nursing Instructor in the online BSN program at Colorado Mesa University. In this position, I developed and taught two course curriculums for the program—Legal & Ethical Implications of Practice, and Current Issues in Nursing.
Additionally, I have owned and operated, STASH, a cannabis dispensary and cultivation facility in Aspen, Colorado, with my husband, since 2011. From 2011 to early 2014, we operated as a medical marijuana facility. In March 2014, cannabis was legalized in Colorado and we converted our store and grow to recreational. My official title is Chief Operations Officer, but I am literally involved in everything on a daily basis, including taking care of the plants, managing the dispensary and employees, overseeing compliance, managing the office, and completing all required state and local applications.
